How do you plan for vacations?

vacationsI don’t know about you, but this Spring has been and continues to be a roller coaster ride. I must say the warm temperature and no rain on Victoria Day were wonderful. You wait for days like those. To add to the magic of this day I saw a cardinal family. The babies were little grey fluff balls and were being fed by their parents. That was a constant process! The babies had made their way onto tree branches from their nest in the cedar hedge in our backyard. Fortunately I had the use of my husband Jim’s camera so I could take many pictures. I had to hide behind the gazebo so they did not see me!

I hope you did some fun things on your long weekend as well.

This summer we plan to head out West via the U.S.A. in our trailer. This is our first of many journeys. We have specific places to visit. First up is a brother-in-law in St. Louis. I have heard the food is pretty darn great there. We then head west to see Mount Rushmore and the Devils Tower in South Dakota. We have many relative to meet and greet along the way in Canada both on Jim’s side and mine. Most are in Alberta and British Columbia. It has been a while since we have connected physically.

Jim is amazing at detail work and has an itinerary all planned out with many RV parks, truck stops etc. I have heard from a few people that Walmart will often let you park at the end of their property if you ask permission. We will be testing that one out too. We will be visiting a few of my old haunts I visited when I was 19 years old on a journey with my parents, such as Pancake Bay Provincial Park on Lake Superior on a beautiful stretch of beach. The water is cold; the beach extends into the shallow bay. With my parents gone this will be a reminder of some good times spent.

So in planning for your summer vacation, or indeed for your life or business, have you got an itinerary? Do you know where you are headed? Have you factored in the cost and kept a budget? Will you be able to stay on track? This is true even for day trips. Are you impulsive? This is me at times and I have to be aware of this. I have learned to look at some items as “Do I need this? Or is it just a want?” Sometimes giving yourself a few minutes away from this choice often cools off the want button.

Vacations should be fun and be restful at times. I know we will be moving a lot on our journey, however we have factored in some down times where we spend a couple of days in one place. The beauty of the trailer is you have your own bed every night. I would find different beds nightly hard to adjust to.

So by the end of this summer we will have travelled all of western Canada. We did eastern Canada in 2012. I love our country and consider it a privilege to get to see so much of it. It may just be in snip-its, but we will get a good idea of each province. I am sure we will meet some pretty amazing people. We always have and I am counting on meeting more.

Here’s to an amazing summer in 2014. Whether warm or cold it will be so. Enjoy every moment with your loved ones!

Sue
