We Are a Global Community

This month seems to be the time for us here in Canada when the world slowed down, almost to a stop. We learned in December 2019 that China had the Corona virus or as we know it now, COVID-19. We watched as they closed down Wuhan, China. One hospital was built in 10 days! Another one followed a couple days after that one, unthinkable in so many ways. Traffic stopped, stores and factories closed, mandatory isolation began for all its citizens. The numbers climbed both for the number of people with the virus and the death count until March when their numbers were under 10. Not only had they wrangled this disease by being super vigilant, but their air quality was so clean you could actually see them on satellite!

To me, China became a beacon on light for the rest of the world. They showed us all how to deal with this virus. Not only did they show us, but they helped other areas of the world who were not as quick to shut their cities and towns down. Their Doctors along with medical supplies including respirators to assist patient’s with lung problems, came to other countries. Italy was one such country as they had not shut down their city of Rome quickly enough and the spread of COVID-19 was massive. It was learned that this disease primarily effected the older generation or those with medical issues. As time went on the younger generation were affected as well, though it seems not children. Medical professionals died. Because we are a Global community the spread continued especially on cruise ships, and planes.

In so many ways I am thankful to live in Canada! We heeded China’s warning to the world. Trenton became a base for quarantining people returning from China by air planes, or cruise ships. Other Canadians self isolated for two weeks and for the most part those that tested positive had mild cases. This included our Prime Ministers wife Sophie. Last week schools extended March break by two weeks. Wellspring where I volunteer giving Reiki to cancer patients closed until at least April 6th. Yesterday the YMCA closed as well. Goodwill also closed down until later in April. This is where I meet weekly for Forest City Toastmasters. We have all been encouraged to stay in our homes in Canada and not to pursue vacations in other countries. Those abroad have been encouraged to return home immediately. For many this was not possible as airports and borders have been closed.

We were to have travelled to New Orleans in April, but this now will be put on hold until later in the year. Distancing ourselves from others is now the new normal. Many variations of the former handshake are happening e.g., touching elbows, bowing, touching feet etc. I don’t know about you, but life is certainly back to basics. It reminded me of when I first retired as a nurse and had not yet decided what would be the next chapter. Now this chapter is closed temporarily, and it feels very weird. For some strange reason people are hoarding toilet paper. I don’t know about you, but when I get the big bag of toilet paper from Costco it will last us 3 months for the two of us. Why would anyone need several large bags of it? This virus doesn’t give you diarrhea! You may have a cough, runny nose, sore throat and fever. I guess this is how people feel when they want some control in this mixed up world. I saw on Facebook some toilet paper jewellery! Such a great sense of humour shown here!

Global community

Yesterday I exercised and did some yoga. I truly miss going to yoga offered by Wellspring plus all the friends I have made there. I am grateful that I bought the book written by my teachers. It reminds me of their teachings and helps to keep me balanced. I also went with a friend to Alymer Conservation Area to view over 2000 swans returning to Canada. What a sight that was. Though it was cold, the sun was shinning and it was such a beautiful day. People were courteous and tried to keep their distance from each other. Mother Nature can be so soothing when times are tough. This can be a time for introspection. I know that I have been putting off organizing the crawl space. I will have to check first to see if the recycling depot is closed before I start! By putting it out here, I hope this inspires me to get on with it!!

In many ways this event has brought the world closer as a global community. We are just one world and what we do truly affects others. Many acts of kindness have already been shown and I am sure will continue to do so. Keep an eye out for any of your neighbours who may need some help. Follow directives as indicated by your country, Public Health, and the W.H.O. Send out prayers to the medical staff who cannot isolate themselves. They tirelessly go to work to help their very sick clients. They often get sick because of the continued exposure and exhaustion. They also fear that they will bring this virus home to their own families. I know with Sars many paid the ultimate price.

Most importantly, wash your hands with soap and water, cough into your sleeve and stay home except to get essentials. Yes hand sanitizer is great if you are out, but soap and water is best. Choose a short song to wash by! We are lucky here in London that our water from the taps is readily available and safe. Most of all remember to laugh, play, sing, read a book, listen to music, watch a good movie on the T.V. and get out in nature, even if it is just your own back yard or balcony! This too will pass. I hope that when it does we will continue to be a better, kinder world!

If you need me, Reiki can be sent long distance from me to you in your home! Keep safe everyone.

Sue
